What is the first thing you do when you arrive in Taiwan? You save all your receipts of course!!!
I love how uniform all the receipts are, it makes it a lot easier to keep track of all of them. Yes, I am aware I have a lot of 7-11 receipts but 7-11 here is totally different from the Western version of it.
The left side is the front and the right side is the back of the receipt.
In Taiwan, every receipt you get is a lottery ticket. Whether you purchase something for $1NT or $1,000,000NT you will have an equal chance of winning prizes from the Taiwan government. Eight unique numbers are printed on every receipt and you match the numbers from right to left. Most places you purchase from will give a receipt, except for most mom and pop shops and some street vendors.
The lottery numbers are picked every two months so hold onto them until they are chosen. On the day of the lottery, the winning numbers are published in all the daily newspapers and online at this link. Six eight digit number combos are chosen at random. Three number combos are chosen for the Grand Prize and the other three are chosen for first prize. In order to win the Grand Prize ($2,000,000NT) you have to match all the numbers in the exact order. First prize is a lot easier to win because you don’t have to match all the numbers exactly to win a prize. You start by matching the first number from right to left in consecutive order.
The red text on top tells you which months and year you can play this ticket. The 98 refers to the year, which in this case is 2009 (Taiwan was founded in 1911 which is when they started to count the years so you basically take whatever the current year is and subtract 1911 to get the current Taiwan year) and the 7-8 refers to July/August. The line below with "HL" is the actual lottery number you play and the blue text under that is the stamp from they place you got the receipt from.
If you match 3 numbers in sequential order you win $200NT ($6USD).
If you match 4 numbers in sequential order you win $1,000NT ($30USD).
If you match 5 numbers in sequential order you win $4,000NT ($120USD).
If you match 6 numbers in sequential order you win $10,000NT ($300USD).
If you match 7 numbers in sequential order you win $40,000NT ($1,200USD).
If you match 8 numbers in sequential order you win $200,000NT ($6,000USD).
If you ever win, make sure you claim your prize within ten months at your local Post Office.
