If you commute daily in Taipei using Taipei's Rapid Transit System, you might want to invest in an EasyCard also called 悠遊卡 (Pinyin: Yōu-yóu Kǎ) in mandarin. This card works for the MRT (Metro), and Taipei buses. It can be also be used in some others cities, ferries in Danshui, parking meters, YouBikes (public rental bikes) and some taxis even accept it.
Its really convenient to have and it saves you money in the long run. An adult card cost $500NT with $100NT going towards the deposit for the card and the rest into credit. If you use the card for the MRT you save 20% off the token price which adds up. They have a student card which saves you 30% but you need to have a valid student ID to purchase one from a staff member.
You will find these machines at every station and can add up to $10,000NT credit onto any card.

These scanners can be found at all entrances and exits at every MRT station. All you have to to do is place it in the scan zone upon entering and exiting and the computer calculates the fare. You can also purchase one way tokens to use and just place it into the coin slot. The sensor has a relatively large range so I typically leave my card in my wallet and just glide it over the "Sensor Zone" to save time.
